Fortune 500 Business Blogging Wiki

Source :

Picture 1-6Ross Mayfield and Chris Anderson of Wired Magazine have put up this public wiki page whose goal is to track which of the Fortune 500 companies are blogging and what affect blogging has on their success. While this may not seem too difficult there are some issues which will make it difficult to come up with concrete results. First, is “what to include”, while fewer companies have official blogs or CEO blogs, many have external blogs run people within the company. Sun Microsystems, for example, has around 2000 blogs, including the well known Jonathan Schwartz blog. Second is “how to measure affect” on success. There are so many factors to success that I would think it’d be very difficult to pin down the actual affect of blogging. Jim Collin’s book “Built to Last” is a good example of the type of exhaustive research that goes into studying what habits have a positive affect on businesses.
So while, I think concrete results will be hard to come by, I’m still glad it’s being done because it’ll be a great resource for people wanting to know more about these large companies. I would recommend that a similar exercise be done for wiki’s. Blogging shakes things up by providing a new avenue for communication (other than the PR department), but if companies really want to take a leap forward towards embracing their community, a public wiki is the next stop :-)
