Formatting Fully Specified

Source :

I saw a web page, a while back- I’ve lost track of it. I can’t find it by google now. If you know where it is, please post below!

The basic idea is this:

The cost of formatting wars is demonstratably very high. The benefit of one formatting over more or less any other respected formatting, is very low. Therefore, language designers should fully specify the formatting used in a program.

What this means, for example, is that you MUST indent your code a certain way. You MUST place your braces in a certain way. You MUST name methods in CamelCase, or with underscore_between_words_with_no_caps, etc., etc., etc.,.

If we do this, then all these automatic tools can do nifty things for us, and everyone’s code will be much more consistent. At the very least, it would put a complete end to all debates over how the code should be formatted.

I thought it was a great idea, (though it’s met with resistance,) and am interested in finding the original post, so that I can follow up to see if anyone else has done anything with the idea.

If you know where it is, please point me to it.
